Remove Bad Links
Backlinks audits allow you to see all the links to your website so you can remove bad links and gain insights to help build more authoritative links.
Search engine ranking factors are heavily influenced by high-quality backlinks from related, high-authority websites. However, the inverse is also true in that a high quantity of low-quality backlinks (like spam) will negatively influence your search result appearance. In a worst-case scenario it is possible that you could fall victim to a negative SEO attack, which entails a high number of spam links are directed at your website so that you are penalised by search engines.
Whilst it is out of your control who links to your website, there are a few measures you can take to ensure you maintain a healthy backlink profile. It all starts with a backlink audit. These reports display lists of all the domains linking to your website and rank them according to their spam score. The links can be inspected manually to determine whether further action needs to be taken.
If you do find a high quantity of spam links to your website there a few things you can do to ensure they don’t influence your rankings. The first step is to reach out to the site owner and ask them to remove the link to your website. Individual site owners aren’t usually very receptive but the website provider is usually quite happy to remove the website given that it violates their terms & conditions.
If that doesn’t work, you can upload a disavow file to Google which indicates that they should not take the link(s) into account when ranking your website. This can take a while to process and should be implemented carefully as if you accidentally remove links which have been passing positive link authority your results may suffer. Ideally, it is best to remove the link rather than have it disavowed but both approaches can also be used simultaneously.
Backlink audits can also provide details as to what anchor text is being used and the exact URL being linked to. This can help you monitor whether you are being linked to correctly (ie. using the correct URL – https:// vs. http://). In addition, you can compare your backlink profile with that of competitors to identify opportunities to receive more high-authority links to your website.
